Call for Proposals

Draft 1

The New England Library Instruction Group (NELIG), an interest group of ACRL New England, is requesting proposals from those interested in presenting at this year's annual program, "How Students Learn," to be held at Western New England College, Springfield, MA on Friday June 6th, 2008.

We encourage proposals from individuals, groups of panelists or those interested in facilitating lunch time round table discussions.  Proposals that addess factors impacting student learning, and how librarians can leverage this knowledge to effectively teach information literacy skills are of particular interest.  Proposal topics could include but are not limited to:

  • Studies of student learning or research habits (in the library, at home, online, etc.)
  • Innovation in instruction and information literacy programs to accomodate student learning styles
  • Learning styles in an online environment
  • Innovative use of library spaces to enhance the student learning experience
  • Learning styles through the generations (Gen X, Gen Y, The New Silent Generation, etc.)
  • Cognitive abilities of college students
  • Gaming as a learning tool
  • Managing the e-classroom to enhance learning

Each speaker or panel group should plan on presenting for approximately 25 minutes of a 45 minute session, leaving ample time for questions and discussion after the presentation.   Interactive presentations are highly encouraged.

For speakers and panelists, please submit a one-page proposal including complete contact information and technology or equipment requirements.

For round table facilitators, please submit a brief paragraph describing your round table, 3 to 5 potential questions you would use to facilitate a lively discussion, and complete contact information.  Technology and equipment will not be available at round tables.

All proposals should be submitted to Sara Marks (smarks@fsc.edu) or Laurie Sabol (laurie.sabol@tufts.edu) by February 22, 2008.

-AL comments: I don't think we want to do posters.  We tried having a poster session 1 or 2 years and at the most got 1 response, which we then asked if it could be turned into a presentation.  We should set the date for Feb 22 and then we can extend it if we get to 2/21 and don't have many submissions.  We should also include something about what to put in the one-page proposal. I added what was in a previous call.

-KM Comments: I agree about the posters, but one thing that was a hit last year was the roundtables, which we did among the planning group, but we could also ask people if they want to moderate too.  This would be another thing to check on the site visit to make sure the seating for lunch would work for this.

-I forgot about those.  Nobody showed up to mine since people apparently have no interest in standardized assessment of IL. (not that I really do myself!)  :(  But the other one's did look very successful.  Let's add it!  I added some possible text above but had questions....  -LRH

-LS comments. I'm sending a draft of the proposal now. I've limited the amount of info said about the lunchtime roundtables but we can tinker until we send out the offical proposal on Wed.

-LRH - Laurie, did you get any comments on the Call?  Hope the site visit went well this morning!
